230905 A Life of Service

A Life of Service

Don't wait until the stars align

Don't wait until you own life's fine

Don't wait until you feel the call

For then, you'll do nothing at all

As Christians, God calls us to be

The hands and feet of Christ, you see

Not sit on hands, let others do

What God has clearly asked of you

A thing that Christ would never say

"Come back tomorrow or next day,"

For when on earth and saw a need

Didn't abdicate, but took the lead

Thus, by example,  taught us how

To be of service here and now

Not later on - perhaps next week

Or say, "Sure," but insincerely speak

With no intent to follow through

For after all, who's serving you

Or when a need is on display

Perhaps you turn the other way

Forgetting all past times that you

Had need of help from others, too

For when in need, don't want delays

Or empty words like "it's okay"

You need someone to render aid

With help or time or attention paid

Like Samaritan upon the road

Who stopped to share another's load

So, be that one for someone else

And put your own needs on the shelf

For God promises that when you do

He'll bless you and take care of you

Dear Lord, today expand my view

To see ones to give service to

Thus, seek them out purposefully

To think of others before me

Teach me to be more like your Son

Who rendered aid to everyone

Give me a heart that longs to serve

Not shyly, but with supreme verve

Learn from my Savior; serve the same

I ask all this in Jesus' name

1 Peter 4:10

As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace

Matthew 23:11

The greatest among you shall be your servant

Proverbs 19:17

Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed

Luke 6:38

Mark 9:35

Matthew 20:28, 25:35-30
