240520 What is Love?
What Is Love?
What is love? It's sacrifice
It isn't simply being nice
Caring for others more than you
And showing it in what you do
It's putting others first in line
Not giving them left over time
Desiring to meet their needs
In fact, your own it supercedes
What is love if genuine?
It isn't chocolates, roses, wine
Those tokens can be lovely, true
Feels like you're saying, "I love you."
But true love isn't wrapped in things
Nor anything that money brings
It's wrapped in kindness, patience, too
And always wants what's best for you
Real love's not simply words you say
Nor does it demand its own way
Won't even keep accounting of
The times you did or did not love
See, love's not about keeping score
For love to grow and then mature
Must put own ego on a shelf
And truly learn to die to self
Love's more than hugs around our necks
Love always trusts, always protects
Love always seeks to see the best
Love is the safest place to rest
In love, there are no doubts or fears
It always hopes and perseveres
The thing that can keep hate at bay
Received most when given away
Our Lord, Jesus embodied love
It's why he was sent from above
For God so loved the world that He
Sacrificed Christ for you and me
And now what Father asks of us
Is to love Him and others thus
In every hour, every day
Love in a sacrificial way
Let love in you shine so brightly
That through you it is Christ they'll see
Not what you take, but what you give
That proves that you know what love is
