240808 Perfection

 Perfection

Could never score a perfect ten
Or dream I'd be Olympian
Most things in life, I'm fair or worse
Yet, still possess perfection's curse

Don't know when notion came to me
That perfect's something I should be
But, come it did, since was a kid
So all my imperfections hid

Or tried to hide them best I could
Though childish, did through adulthood
Still difficult to let down guard
Admit shortcomings is so hard

Oh, what a toll perfection takes
To live in fear of all mistakes
To care so much what others see
As if that is what values me

Perfection's hold can paralyze
Or come as "driven" in disguise
Though also drive you to distraction
Can motivate you into action

Perfection has its place, I guess
Some things require nothing less
But when your worth is tied to it
Its pursuit becomes a darkened pit

To do my best's a lofty goal
Perfection never was my role
For imperfection's not a vice
No perfect man, but Jesus Christ

Dear Father, t'was your perfect plan
That you have made me who I am
All imperfections found in me
Can each be used for your glory
For in my weakness, you are strong
And you can right my every wrong
Thus, help me strive to do my best
Then trust in you to do the rest
To seek each day to be like Christ
Til perfection comes in paradise
