241028 Eye to Eye

 Eye to Eye

We're not seeing things eye to eye
Can't reach consensus, though we try
We both have different points of view
Could either side be just as true?

Each conviction equally strong
But is one right, the other wrong?
Discussions lead to argument
Where great emotion has been spent

The arguing can go all night
If each side needs to prove they're right
The words grow harsh, or there are tears
Voices are loud, but no one hears

Talking is strained with teeth that clinch
While neither side gives in an inch
Let's just agree to disagree
That feels like surrender to me

Both sides have noses out of joint
For neither will concede their point
Then, even when argument seems through
A stony silence may ensue

Relationships are precious gifts
How does one settle such a riff
Can there ever be compromise
When folks aren't seeing eye to eye

Eye for an eye; tooth for a tooth
Seems the world's motto since its youth
But Jesus taught a better way
A way to rise above the fray

When "struck" to turn the other cheek
Requires strength; to world seems weak
To hold your tongue, though are provoked
To squelch the flames, not keep them stoked

All issues need not spark debate
When goaded, do not take the bait
Instead, as much as up to you
To live in peace; harmony too

Not as a hawk, but like a dove
Speak words of kindness and of love
When like Christ, we identify
This world will see more eye to eye
