250416 Anxious Thoughts

Anxious Thoughts

You try to fight them every day
Can't keep your anxious thoughts at bay
Where do you go? What do you do
When in your anxious thoughts, you stew?

They wake you up from slumber deep
Then into groggy mind they creep
Once there, continue growing strong
You're wide awake before too long

Can often cause your heart to race
Or back and forth, your feet will pace
Your muscles tense, palms start to sweat
Then, head will ache the more you fret

Satan's behind your anxious thoughts
Delights in upsets, stress, and taunts
For when you focus on your mess
He's taken from you happiness

So, when your thoughts are stressing you
Replace each one with thoughts anew
Not on problems, though big they be
But on God of eternity

For conscious effort, you must wield
Before the anxious thoughts will yield
Fixate your mind, not on "what ifs"
But on your Father's bestowed gifts

Gift of peace despite circumstance
Of joy so feet don't pace but dance
The gift of hope for future bright
To make your heavy burdens light

The gift of trust that He knows best
The gift of calm so you can rest
All of these from God freely given
So thoughts no longer anxious driven

With practice, each time angst appears
You'll learn to quickly halt your fears
With trust, and praise, and also prayer
Till anxious thoughts are seldom there
