250529 The Tongue

 The Tongue

The tongue can taste sour or sweet,
Spicy, salty from foods we eat
Tongue also can leave bitter taste
In others, with words said in haste

The tongue is such a little thing
But oh, the damage it can bring
Used as a weapon to attack
With words that can't be taken back

Tongue spews the anger we're emoting
Plus gossip, slander, falsehoods, gloating
List of its faults - a lengthy one
Fight to control it - no one's won

Through it all mankind has been shamed
For tongue's a thing that can't be tamed
Can be used in a dreadful fashion
When reasoning gives way to passion

It's easier to hold the sun
Than hold the hot wrath of the tongue
How quickly is it prone to lies
When caught, and needing alibis

Yet, honey can drip off the tongue
If loving relationship's begun
Or while singing a lullaby
Sweet enough for grown men to cry

And what about honor it pays
To its Maker with songs of praise
Or loving words like a spring breeze
That put a troubled soul at ease

Can use to speak encouragement
To one who finds their hope is spent
Or voice God's truth while witnessing
About our slain and risen King

Is how we use our tongue a choice
Do we decide what words we voice
Or is it all beyond control
If no man's tamed it, what's our role

If that's the case, why not just quit
Stay mute and never speak with it
A life where no one says a word
Though silence's golden - that's absurd

Both curse and praise, that should not be
So, I shall fight it diligently
Knowing that I don't fight alone
But with the power behind the throne

Though sinful nature's at its root
To tame the tongue's worthy pursuit
So Lord, help all my words be sweet
My hateful utterances, defeat

May love and patience be among
The kind things that roll off my tongue
And may I never be tongue-tied
In praising You both far and wide
