230823 Push Me - Pull You
Push Me - Pull You
I remember a story told when I was little
'Bout a fictional character named Doctor Doolittle
And a magical animal - though I know it's not true
With the fanciful name of Pushmi - Pullyu
A llama-like creature with heads at both ends
How it knows where to go; we'll, I guess, that depends
On whether it wants to come here or go there
Or perhaps when conflicted, then it goes nowhere
It got me to thinking that I have had times
That just like this creature, I've been of two minds
In my circumstances, I just didn't know
If I should be coming or if I should go
My heart and emotions would "push me" one way
While intellect "pull you" told me I should stay
So often in my life I have come to find
There's a push and a pull between the heart and the mind
I've heard the old adage to follow your heart
But, surely our brain also must play a part
Acting just with emotion doesn't really seem wise
Yet, you might not act at all if over analyze
So, how do we manage the push and the pull
When our hearts and our minds are both very full
If you're in a quandary like Pushmi-Pullyu
Then where do you turn so you know what to do
You turn to the maker of all of these things
For no one comes close to the wisdom He brings
And no heart is bigger than the One who made hearts
So, it's certain that both hearts and minds must play parts
Lord, I pray that you push me toward right thing to do
And when troubles come they pull me only to you
May the pushes and pulls of this life only serve
As a way to build trust in you, for you deserve
All my faith, love and hope, and my heart, soul, and mind
I need only do little faith - mustard seed kind
Matthew 17:20
For truly I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, "Move from here to there," and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you
Psalm 86:11
Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name
James 1:5-8
Proverbs 4:23
