240809 Why Do We ...?

 Why Do We ...?

Why do we hurt those who are close
The ones we say we love the most
We say things we would never say
To other people in our day

Why do we treat the most unfair
People of whom we say we care
Why do we act with such disgrace
To those we know can't be replaced

Why do we act with such contempt
To very ones that heaven sent
Taking for granted their value
Forgetting they have feelings, too

And why is it that we treat best
The chicks that live in other's nest
And with our chick's are short, or shout
Too seldom give benefit of doubt

We're careful what we say and do
When friends or strangers are in view
But, when our loved ones we're among
Don't treat them kind or hold our tongue

Is it because we think that they
Will tolerate all things we say
Or, since you know that they love you
It's thing you think's okay to do

My friends, we know all this is wrong
In loving home, does not belong
Not where we're in each other's face
Instead of safe and happy place

The Bible says to love like Christ
And that's much more than good advice
Love everyone, your neighbors, too
But mostly those who live with you

So, if you're guilty of these things
Repent, receive the grace that brings
And if these have been done to you
Extending grace's what you should do

Dear Father,  guide each word and thought
So I love loved ones as I ought
Not treat their feelings carelessly
But, as I'd want them to treat me
Forgive my harshness, sharp retorts
Repent of times I've fallen short
Help me to love more generously
The way that you, Lord, have loved me
