240906 Comfort

 Comfort

What does comfort feel like to you?
A soft blanket? A slippery shoe?
A bubble bath? A comfy bed?
A warm, knit cap upon your head?

What kind of things are comforting?
A good night kiss? A front porch swing?
"I love you," whispered in your ear?
Sweet voice of someone you hold dear?

What makes you feel most comfortable?
Stretch pants that neither bind nor pull?
Someone you trust with your secrets
Speak freely to without regrets?

And nothing is quite as comfy
As snuggling with a cup of tea
With winter winds howling outdoors
While inside cozy fire roars

To be uncomfortable's no fun
At parties where you know no one
Or when you must get up to speak
But nervous voice is just a squeak

Uncomfortable situations
Are ones we avoid being in
Would rather stay in comfort zone
Even if it means we are alone

Things of comfort we've all enjoyed
Uncomfortable ones we avoid
That's the way of all human beings
Seek comfort and not harder things

To desire comfort's very nice
If highest goal, then becomes vice
For too much comfort hinders growth
Ease and discomfort  - we need both

So, if we stay in comfort zone
Then can we truly say we've grown
For growth is born of struggling
Reward it brings is comforting

If we use Christ as our example
Discomforts, we know he had ample
For his was not an easy life
But one with hardships, lack and strife

Though comfort to others, Christ showed
His own comfort was not his goal
To those in power - seemed uncouth
Refused his uncomfortable truths

For us, Christ's truths are welcoming
Their hope and promise, comforting
Even his words that make us squirm
Are lessons from which we can learn

Of course, enjoy comforting things
For they are truly God's blessings
But lack of comfort's blessing, too
For growing and refining you
