241015 Generosity

 Generosity

I wish I were more generous
With time and money too
Not out of guilt or grudgingly
But with a heart that's true

I wish I always gave of self
Without a second thought
I know that's how my Father does
And that's the way I ought

I'd like to be the kind that gives
The shirt off of my back
But when it comes to selflessness
- A trait I sometimes lack

For there are times I hesitate
When someone is in need
Hoping that others heed the call
So I won't have to lead

While other times, I look away
As if don't see their hurt
That way, I can keep my hands clean
Not get down in their dirt

Then, oh what shame I feel inside
For it is wrong, I know
To fail to be compassionate
When God has blessed me so

View self as good Samaritan
But in reality
Sometimes walk other side of road
Pretending not to see

I know sometimes I'm generous
Sometimes is not enough
I want to be one counted on
When others have it rough

For oft I've been recipient of
Generosity of others
And God calls us to show our love
To all sisters and brothers

Remind me, God nothing is mine
It's all a gift from you
So, when I give back generously
I'm acting as you do

Create in me a servant's heart
That never fails to see
Each human being as your child
Then, love them generously
