 Good Deeds

Are your good deeds for world to see

Or to impress the powers that be

Not wholly done as sacrifice 

But just so others think you're nice

When doing good, are motives pure

Or for the brownie points you score

For even when good deeds are true

Do you boast, or expect "thank you"

Is good behavior all for show

To earn the praise of those you know

Or done with true humility

Not like the prayers of Pharisees

For they did good to play a part

But Jesus saw into their heart

And likewise, he can see yours too

Thus knows true reasons good you do

Don't get me wrong, nor stop the good

Just do them in the way you should

To glorify Father above

All selflessly and done with love

Not to receive the praise of man

But done in secret, if you can

Then, in the open God will bless

Your goodness done with selflessness

Are good deeds done to earn your way

Through pearly gates of heaven someday

Don't you know Savior died for you

So, earn your way's not what you do

Confess that Jesus is the Lord

Then heaven will be your reward 

Meanwhile, good deeds you'll gladly do

In thanks for all God's done for you
