240612 Nothing I Do
Nothing I Do
I know that heaven's a free gift
Nothing I do can earn it
A lesson taught me as a child
Then why must I relearn it
For all too often, I will strive
In works, to please the Lord
Not simply out of love for him
Approval, I work toward
Believing that if I fall short
He'll be upset with me
So, in shameful repentance
I fall down upon my knees
My heart tells me God's not that way
My head says otherwise
Sure he looks at me with contempt
And not with loving eyes
Yet, still his Spirit whispers
It's my heart only, He needs
His love for me's unending
Not contingent on my deeds
So, as I contemplate that truth
My heart is filled with awe
That He could love me just as much
When I've done nothing at all
His love's tied to nothing I do
Loves in spite of my sin
For I am His beloved child
And as such belong to Him
So, out of gratitude, I find
My heart wants to please His
It's nothing I'm required to do
Just how I choose to live
Just three things I will strive to do
God requires nothing more
But to do justly, love mercy
Walk humbly with my LORD
