241206 Broken Heart

 Broken Heart

I've built a wall around my heart
I built it sturdy, thick, and strong
To keep out heartache, keep out pain
Sure it will work; what could go wrong

You see, my heart's been hurt before
When I let all defenses down
Won't let that happen second time
For broken hearts make dreadful sound

So, I won't take another chance
My heart's now under lock and key
No longer vulnerable am I
Won't let another close to me

The plan is working rather well
No one gets close enough to harm
But, if they try, then quick rebuke
Is quite effective to disarm

So, safe and isolated am
Like princess in a castle tower
I'm free from pain that love can cause
Yet... also, from its healing power

I've kept heart safe from further hurt
I've done my best without a doubt
No pain can scale these castle walls
But also, no love can get out

From end of friendship, love's demise
From loss of pet or shattered dreams
Abandonment or life's hard knocks
We all have heartbreak, so it seems

For, with all loving comes a risk
You must decide if worth to take
Is worth the chance or too high-priced
To love, or not, could be mistake

God made our hearts to give away
Not put on shelf to safely keep
Though they can break, he mends them too
They're made for love, and for love deep

God, show me how to soften mine
Back to the one it's called to be
And not keep hardened and apart
Because of things world's done to me

All things in life have chance to break
If they are used, not locked away
Perhaps again that risk I'll take
I know through Christ's the only way
