250605 Mercy

 Mercy

There's no one throughout history
Who's lived out their life perfectly
For everyone, for goodness sakes
By very nature makes mistakes

No person since the start of time
Who hasn't gotten out of line
Except our Savior, Jesus Christ
The rest of us are full of vice

And while this truth is plain to see
Why is it hard to grant mercy
We don't see log in our own eye
But other's specks, we surely spy

Try to live right, to no avail
So we seek mercy when we fail
Yet, do we give it out freely
Or see others as unworthy

Mercy is such a holy thing
That can remove transgression's sting
When compassion and forgiveness shown
For other's failings and our own

More than that, it mimics our Lord
His power to punish or reward
To punish - justifiable
Yet, very nature's merciful

Who did not withhold his own Son
Greatest act of mercy done
Christ paid the price he'd not accrued
Our right response is gratitude

And in turn, dispense mercy, too
A wholly loving thing to do
For God's mercy is born of love
A thing this world needs much more of

While mercy's not what we deserve
Extending it is how we serve
A loving God who has our heart
No better time than now to start
