250506 A Little Bird

 A Little Bird

As I prepared to hit the hay
After completing  'nother day
Turned off the light, lay my head down
Through open window, heard a sound

From right outside came rhythmic squeak
And though through curtains did not peek
I knew at once it was a bird
That in the dark of night I heard

Thought odd to hear a songbird sound
When light of day was not around
For I assumed they slept like me
When sunshine they no longer see

Yet, through the night in bed I laid
And heard this sweet bird's serenade
The off and on of high-pitched cheep
Accompanied my off-on sleep

When morning came and rose from bed
Saw out my window flash of red
Male cardinal flits hither, yon
Singing same chirp to great the dawn

I've heard him chirping the whole day
For from my yard he does not stray
Though haven't discovered where yet
There is a nest nearby, I bet

I tossed sunflower seeds his way
So to encourage him to stay
Though needed no encouragement
Sharing my yard - he's quite content

Some say this red bird is a sign
Of good luck or something divine
I choose to see divinity
In every joy God shares with me

All that I know is my heart leaps
At flash of red and distinct cheeps
If sweet bird makes me feel this way
There is no doubt God's hand's at play

I thank you, Lord for joy you've stirred
In my soul through this little bird
His sweet, sweet song, feathered displays
To you, God, I give all the praise!
